Most one-day Abu Dhabi itineraries try to fit too much in. This one is built around three anchors and a realistic amount of driving between them, with a private car handling the parking so none of the time is spent looking for a space.
Morning: Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
Start early. The mosque is at its calmest in the morning and the light on the white marble is best before the middle of the day. Visiting hours and dress requirements are set by the mosque itself and can change, so check their published guidance before you travel.
Midday: Saadiyat Island
From the mosque it is a comfortable drive to Saadiyat. The Louvre Abu Dhabi is the obvious stop, and the surrounding cultural district is pleasant to walk. If the group includes children, the beach is a better use of the middle of the day than a second museum.
Afternoon: the Corniche
The Corniche is eight kilometres of waterfront with the Emirates Palace district at one end. It works either as a late-afternoon walk or as a place to sit with a coffee and watch the light change over the water.
Making it work
- Three anchors is the right number for a single day; four is where it stops being enjoyable
- Keep the car for the whole day rather than booking each leg separately
- Confirm the sequence with your chauffeur in the morning so the driving is planned as a whole
- Leave the last hour unallocated, because something always takes longer than expected
A good itinerary is defined as much by what you leave out as by what you include.
